‘In her ruthless red romance’represents for me the metaphorical association women have with nature; the earth is seen as female, as in ‘mother nature.’ ‘Gaia’, is the Greek word for Mother Nature, how she heals, nurtures and supports all life on the planet. By interrogating the native flora and its traditional uses, geological formations and collecting samples of the local flora, found objects and capturing the textures and imagery of the landscape, I not only empower and observe nature in my work, I form a connection between mind, body and land.
“Patritha’ is the Greek word for ‘motherland’ or ‘one’s native place’ and in this body of work I aim to provide a personal commentary on the symbiosis between Indigenous Australian cultural values and the cultural values of my Greek heritage and the important interconnections between humans and nature. |
